Cairncross Prize

The Scottish Economic Society awards a prize of £1000 for the best paper presented at its annual conference by an economist currently registered for a PhD or who has successfully completed a PhD between 2021 and 2026.  Please note: All authors on the paper must have received their PhD in 2021 or later or be a PhD Student. To be considered for the prize you MUST select ‘Yes’ from the drop down box AND provide the PhD year for ALL authors.

Registration

Important: Presenting authors must register for the conference by the early closing date of Thursday 14 January 2027 (Registration will open on 3 November 2026). 

Papers whose presenting author has not registered by the deadline of 14 January 2027 will not be included in the programme.

Useful information

  • All presentations will be in person. Please make sure you are able to attend the conference before submitting an abstract. There will be no facility for virtual or recorded presentation.
  • No financial support will be provided. If you are unable to fund your attendance personally or through your institution, please do not submit an abstract/paper.
  • Submissions must be in English and conference presentations are required to be delivered in English. No interpretation services will be available.
  • Visa applications: Please ensure you allow sufficient time to apply for your visa. Delays in visa processing can prevent speakers from attending the meeting, which can create difficulties for the organisers.
  • Deadline for submission is 3 November 2026.
